Grilling spinach is a super simple way to serve up a healthy side - and quickly! All you need is a sheet pan, aluminum foil, and a few choice seasonings!
Grill mode has been activated and I’m grilling anything and everything. Including foods one may not initially consider “grill-friendly” - like spinach leaves!
Why not grill spinach I say. If you have the grill fired up anyways, you might as well make yourself a quick side of spinach. No sense in turning on the stove.

Plus, grilling spinach is super quick and super easy. Once it hits the grill, it only takes 3-4 minutes to cook. That’s it!

How to Grill Spinach Leaves
The best way to grill spinach is to do it on a large sheet pan, then cover with aluminum foil. It lets you cook a lot of spinach at one time; the large surface area of the sheet pan means you don’t have to cook spinach in batches (at least when cooking for two). Covering the sheet pan of spinach with aluminum foil creates a seal that effectively steams your spinach so it cooks quickly.

And you can put those tongs down because there’s no need to fuss with it as it cooks. Just set it and forget it!
At least for 3-4 minutes.
Ingredients - How to Make Grilled Spinach
You can use any combination of seasonings you’d like, but here’s a simple Grilled Spinach recipe that I like to use:
- 10 ounces fresh baby spinach
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or canola oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2-3 dashes of cayenne pepper or hot Hungarian paprika (optional)
Directions - How to Make Grilled Spinach
Preheat the grill to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (by turning the burners of your propane grill to medium heat).
Add spinach to a large sheet pan. Drizzle the spinach with oil (olive or canola).

Sprinkle garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and cayenne pepper (optional) over the spinach.
Toss to combine. You want to keep tossing until the oil and seasonings are fairly evenly distributed, but don’t worry about coating every leaf.
Put the sheet pan of spinach on the grill and cover. Cook for 3-4 minutes and immediately remove from the grill.

Serve immediately. If you leave the foil covering the spinach it will continue to cook, so I recommend uncovering and serving immediately.
What kind of grill do I need to grill spinach?
I wager you can grill spinach perfectly on both charcoal and propane grills when you follow these instructions. However, I have only tried it on a Weber 3-burner propane grill.

Seasoning Ideas and Garnishes for Grilled Spinach
I kept the seasonings simple in this grilled spinach recipe, but you might also consider the following seasonings and garnishes.
Seasonings
- Paprika (smoked or plain)
- Black pepper
- Cumin
- Dried herbs like basil, oregano, or thyme
- Chili powder
Garnishes
- Bacon crumbles
- Feta cheese
- Slivered almonds
Frequently Asked Questions
Yup! Of course, you'll need to put delicate spinach leaves on a baking sheet (or wrap them in foil) before they hit the grill. And they cook quickly so you have to keep a close watch.
The obvious here is to eat grilled spinach as a stand alone side, but you can do a lot with it! Try adding grilled spinach to all kinds of sandwiches (would be fantastic on a simple grilled cheese!), a warm salad (like a warm potato salad), or mix it leftover rice to give it new life.
Sure can! If you don't have a baking sheet, just use aluminum foil instead. It will create the protective barrier needed to cook delicate spinach on the grill.
