Mexican Fruit Salad with Tajin

This simple fruit salad features three kinds of melon - watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew - and is topped with Tajin. This chile lime seasoning adds an acidic zestiness that balances beautifully against sweet melon.

Tajin - which is pronounced "tuh·heen", with an emphasis on the heen - is SO my jam. I can't get enough of the chile lime seasoning - it's tart and citrus-forward, a little spicy, and complements so many things! Like fruit.

Tajin adds a tart sharpness against sweet, fresh fruits; it's seriously addicting!

This Mexican fruit salad is great paired with savory tacos, like these tasty Chicken Fajita Tacos made with a homemade Fajita Seasoning, and provides great textural contrast against these super crispy Air Fryer Chicken Tacos. Or try pairing with a Churro Dutch Baby for breakfast or brunch.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • It's refreshing! I love fresh fruit, and this tri-melon fruit salad is so perfect for summertime.
  • It's unique! Tajin and fresh lime juice make this a fruit salad to remember, adding dynamic and interesting acidic and piquant flavors that balance well against sweet fruit.
  • It's pretty! I love the combination of flavors, but it also looks super delicious! Using a melon baller is an easy way to elevate the presentation.

Ingredients

Mexican fruit salad made with watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon, sprinkled with Tajin and lime juice.
  • Watermelon - Choose a seedless variety if you'd like uniform watermelon balls that you don't have to pick seeds out of.
  • Cantaloupe (or muskmelon) - Smell the blossom end (the outie), which is opposite the stem end (the innie) before buying. If you detect a sweet, slightly musky scent you have found the one.
  • Honeydew melon - Choose a melon where the blossom and stem ends are slightly soft, but pass if too mushy. Avoid honeydews that are too green on the outside.
  • Tajin seasoning - Tajin is a spice blend made with chile peppers, salt, and dehydrated lime juice, and creates and interesting flavor profile when paired with sweet melons.
  • Lime juice - Use freshly squeezed for the best results.

A full ingredient list with exact amounts can be found in the recipe card below - keep scrolling!

Fruit Substitutions

I opted for a trifecta of melons for this fruit salad recipe for a couple of reasons, mostly to achieve a uniform look to the final presentation and because I love melons and how Tajin tastes sprinkled on them. Here are some suggested substitutions, though please note I'm not going for exact flavor swaps here, simply fruits (and veggies!) that would make tasty replacements.

  • Watermelon - Why not try papaya or guava instead? Or maybe toss in some berries like strawberries instead.
  • Cantaloupe (or muskmelon) - Mango is a great addition here if you don't want to use cantaloupe, as is pineapple.
  • Honeydew melon - Honeydew can be kind of... bland. Instead, try using jicama or even a cucumber! Tajin is so so good on cucumbers, a favorite snack of mine.

Variations

This recipe is fantastic with just a little fresh-squeezed lime juice and Tajin seasoning, but you might also consider:

  • Mexican Fruit Salad with Chamoy - When you just are craving a little more spice, a little more heat, reach for some chamoy sauce! Think of it as a fruity hot sauce; I find it pretty mild. If you're feeling zesty, add a drizzle over this fruit salad. Totally okay to use with Tajin to boost the flavors!

Isabel Eats has a fantastic Mexican Fruit Cups recipe using Chamoy and Tajin that is simple and delicious 🙂

How to Make Mexican Fruit Salad - Directions

Prepare the watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew, using a melon baller to scoop out uniform-sized pieces of fruit easily. Add to a bowl.

Add freshly squeezed lime juice and Tajin chile lime seasoning. Toss to coat.

Serve! Makes 6 cups of fruit salad.

Top Tips for the BEST Mexican Fruit Salad

Tip 1. Get yourself a melon baller, which will save you the headache of trying to cut those round melons into uniform pieces.

Tip 2. Opt for the freshest fruit you can find. In Minnesota it can be challenging to find a trifecta of perfectly ripe melons at once - usually one of the three is maybe not as sweet or ripe as it should be. Fortunately, the chile lime seasoning comes to the rescue in the flavor department!

Tip 3. Keep it simple! An easy way to remember the recipe is to add 1 teaspoon lime juice + 1 teaspoon Tajin to 3 cups of fruit. Feel free to adjust the ingredients to your liking.

Equipment

As a recent convert to team melon baller, I recommend spending a few bucks to pick one up. I can't cut up fruit neatly, particularly melons - I overthink it, then get frustrated when I can't achieve uniform pieces without spending what feels like 5 hours on the task. The melon baller creates uniformity with minimal effort and minimal frustration.

I recommend this 5-Piece Melon Baller Scoop Set; it comes with one 4-in-1 melon baller scoop set, one double-headed carving knife scoop, one double-sided melon baller, one peeler, and one avocado cutter.

My only complaint with this melon baller scoop set is with the one double-headed carving knife scoop. The design was not well thought out because the sharp end digs into your hand during use. I have to wrap a towel around the sharp end when using the melon baller.

Tajin with fruit

What is Tajin?

Tajin is a spice blend made with chile peppers, salt, and dehydrated lime juice, and is commonly used to season fresh fruit and vegetables, like mango, jicama, and cucumber. Read more about Tajin and its uses on Food Network.

Recipe FAQs

How long does Mexican fruit salad last?

Stored in the refrigerator, Mexican fruit salad (once mixed with lime juice and Tajin) is best enjoyed within 24 hours. For best results, store the watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew in separate containers and add the Tajin and lime juice right before serving.

What do I do with the leftover melon after melon balling?

The thing about using a melon baller is that it leaves behind some really weird-shaped pieces of fruit. I almost always make this Watermelon Water. But you can also toss those weird-shaped but still delicious pieces into a smoothie or just eat 'em! Sprinkled with Tajin of course!

What other fruits belong in a fruit salad?

There are a lot of great options here, including papaya, mango, pineapple, strawberries, grapes, blueberries, etc. This Mexican fruit salad is also great with veggies (yes veggies!) like jicama and cucumber!
