A Full Flavored Review of Spindrift Sparkling Water

Spindrift is a unique type of sparkling water that uses real fruit juices to add flavor. It addresses two common complaints that I often hear from fizzy water nay-sayers: the flavor is too alkaline and the effervescence is too aggressive.

Real talk: drinking Spindrift is like drinking weakly fruit juice-spiked water with a hint of fizz and no added sugar. That may not be the most exciting description, but Spindrift sure is refreshing. Most sparkling waters have an alkaline quality about them (especially the zero-calorie ones) that a lot of people don’t enjoy. I don’t get that with Spindrift, because fruit juice is used to create the flavor. The downside is added calories, but the calorie amount is so minuscule and the flavor so agreeable I’m willing to look the other way.

Unlike other sparkling waters I’ve reviewed, like AHA and Bubly, the fizz is extremely mild. If you’re not a fizzy water fan because of the aggressive fizz, you might consider Spindrift.

I hate drinking my calories, rarely ever drink juice, but enjoy eating fruit. Spindrift was clearly created to suit my dietary preferences :). Overall, I’m a Spindrift fan - it’s a clear standout among all the fizz on the market.

Blackberry

Blackberries have such a unique sweet, tart, yet slightly bitter flavor that’s really difficult to put into words. Spindrift does a good job of capturing the essence of the elusive blackberry flavor. The result is a refreshing, well-balanced blackberry sparkling water that’s unique and hard to describe but oh so drinkable.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, blackberry juice, lemon juice, and blackberry puree.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 10

Blood Orange

Blood Orange is a lovely sip from start to finish. It's got that pronounced sweet raspberry-like flavor of the real thing that isn't overly acidic. It's like it was kissed by a navel orange, but rounded out with subtle sweetness. This Spindrift flavor ranks highly in my book.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, blood orange juice, tangerine juice, citric acid.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 12

Cranberry Raspberry

Cranberry Raspberry is a tart little number and I love it! The raspberry flavor dominates the drink and the cranberry helps round out the tartness. It gives just enough of the tart-bitter flavor that is each berries signature without the pucker. Easily one of my favorite duos in the lineup as tart berries are my jam.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, raspberry juice, cranberry juice, raspberry puree, and lemon juice.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 8

Grapefruit

100% has that signature tart/bitter grapefruit punch, but significantly less aggressive than drinking straight-up grapefruit juice. The added orange juice here does much to temper the bitterness, resulting in a well-rounded citrus beverage. I very strongly associate grapefruit with breakfast so that’s when I typically indulge in Grapefruit Spindrift.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, grapefruit juice, orange juice, lemon juice, and hibiscus (for color).

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 17

Half Tea Half Lemon

The flavor of Spindrift’s Half Tea Half Lemon immediately reminded me of one of those Arizona iced teas. You know, the ones in the pounder can that cost 99 cents. I can’t recall the last time I had an Arizona tea, but the flavor memory was instant. The calories, carbs, and sugar in Arizona were a motivating factor in abandoning the delicious drink. I’m ecstatic that Spindrift’s Half Tea Half Lemon evokes that Arizona tea-esque flavor (sans sugar) in a 5-calorie beverage, one that I’ll be happily sipping without guilt.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, lemon juice, brewed black tea.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 5

Lemon

Simple, lovely, refreshing. Ideal for when you need to treat yourself and elevate your water intake with a hint of lemon.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, lemon juice.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 3

Lemon Limeade

Lemon Limeade is awesome. It’s wonderfully refreshing and actually lime-forward. Lemon plays its supporting role well, bolstering the citrus but letting the lime be the star. I predict this will be (one of) my favorite summer beverages.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, lime juice, and lemon juice.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 4

Lime

It doesn’t get much more refreshing than sipping water with a splash of lime. Lime has more of a tart punch than Lemon, so reach for it if you’re feeling up for a slight pucker. The beauty of this drink is its simplicity. You really can’t go wrong with this one.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, lime juice.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 4

Orange Mango

Orange and Mango make a happy duo. The mango tames orange’s acidity and the overt flavor is more complex than anticipated. You get the sweet, citrus essence of orange along with the sweet and sour mango. I swear I can even taste the hint of pine that fresh mango has.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, orange juice, alphonso mango puree, citric acid.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 10

Pineapple

This is the best Pineapple-flavored sparkling water you will ever try. Why? Because it’s made from actual pineapple. I’ve tried other pineapple sparkling waters and there’s no escaping the artificial notes that always accompany the flavor. There are more calories in Pineapple Spindrift than nearly all the other flavors at 15 calories per can, but it’s so worth it for the flavor.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, pineapple juice, and citric acid.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 15

Pink Lemonade

My first thought was who cares if the lemonade is pink? After getting over the residual disappointment of the powdered pink lemonades of my youth, I noticed that Spindrift's take was something special. Sweet cherry, lime, and raspberry are VIPs at this flavor party, making it the first un-disappointing Pink Lemonade I've encountered. It's delightfully tart and complex, the lovely pink hue thanks to actual juice, and not red dye #5 (or whatever).

Ingredients: Carbonated water, sweet cherry juice, lime juice, raspberry juice, and lemon juice.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 9

Raspberry Lime

I admittedly don’t like Raspberry Lime as much as I like Cranberry Raspberry. Or just plain old Lime. I think both flavors get a little lost, competing too much for flavor dominance. After having formed stronger preferences for a few of the other flavors, this one fails to impress. It’s good, just not great.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, raspberry puree, raspberry juice, and lime juice.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 9

Strawberry Lemonade

Ah, sweet summer in every sip! Keeping in mind that there’s no added sugar in Spindrift, this Strawberry Lemonade is the sweetest tasting flavor to me, thanks to nature’s candy - strawberry. It’s lovely thanks to a well-balanced combination of sweet strawberry and tart lemon.

Ingredients: Carbonated water, strawberry puree, lime juice, lemon juice.

Calories (per 12 ounce can): 7

Spindrift Sparkling Review Results:

Most of the flavors are solid, really. But I admit to being partial to the following Spindrift flavors:

  • Half Tea Half Lemon
  • Lemon Limeade
  • Cranberry Raspberry
  • Blood Orange

*The Spindrift website also lists the following in their flavor lineup, but I have yet to try them: Strawberry, Cucumber.

Can’t get enough of fizzy water?
