This bangin’ Blueberry Banana Smoothie recipe results in a rich, creamy, and flavorful that you’ll swear you’re having dessert for breakfast - and it’s even dairy-free and vegan-friendly!
I’ve never been much of a smoothie person. Not that I don’t enjoy a good smoothie, but the ingredient planning, time investment, and appliance clean-up have deterred me from making smoothies before heading out the door to work. Though I do have to admit that upgrading to a Vitamix blender has made the smoothie-making task much more enjoyable; a powerful blender takes less time to produce a perfectly blended smoothie.
Now that working from home is my new normal, so has the occasional breakfast smoothie. And this easy dairy-free smoothie recipe has quickly become one of my favorites. Plus, it’s dairy-free! Great for those who follow a vegan diet, can’t have dairy, are looking to cut down on dairy intake, or just want to explore the wonders of canned coconut milk. I gotta say, the thick, rich, creamy texture of canned coconut milk makes this one heavenly smoothie.

Why You'll Love This Recipe
- It's delicious and creamy. Not or. Blueberry and banana smoothies taste wonderful, the banana playing a tropical supporting role against frozen blueberries. Plus the ripe banana and coconut milk combine to make this one super creamy and rich-tasting fruit smoothie.
- It's dairy-free! Many smoothie recipes call for dairy, usually in the form of milk or yogurt. But this smoothie shines in the absence of dairy, the coconut milk bringing a slight tropical edge and contributing to the creaminess. There's no dairy milk, no yogurt in this smoothie recipe.
- It's easy to make. You only need 5 or 6 ingredients to make this smoothie recipe - frozen blueberries, ripe banana, coconut milk, honey, and water (subtract an ingredient if you don't want to include cinnamon).
Ingredients
Ingredients
- Banana - Use a very ripe one, one that's starting to brown. The riper the banana, the sweeter the results.
- Blueberries - Use frozen blueberries for the consistency. If you have fresh blueberries, freeze them overnight so they are ready to go into this smoothie in the morning.
- Coconut milk - Makes the dairy-free smoothie a reality while contributing creaminess and a light coconutty flavor.
- Honey - To lend sweetness; honey does this in a very complimentary way.
- Water - A little water is used here to help achieve the perfect consistency.
- Ground cinnamon - Just a little bit here adds a nice warmth; it's subtle but I like how it boosts the berry flavor. You can of course leave it out if you want a 5-ingredient smoothie 🙂

Why blueberry and banana?
Why not? Bananas are probably the BEST smoothie ingredient, because not only do they add sweetness (especially when you use a nice ripe banana), they have the perfect texture. Bananas create a smoothie with a texture that is beautifully smooth, creamy, and thick.
Blueberries have a tart sweetness that provides a beautiful balance when paired with bananas. It's a lovely flavor combination that lets you enjoy the flavor of both fruits in one delicious smoothie. Plus both blueberry and banana play well with coconut milk, creating one bangin' dairy-free smoothie.
Variations & Additions
This dairy-free smoothie recipe is a great base to which you can add all kinds of different ingredients. Mix it up with these suggestions.
- Toss in some other fruits - Try adding strawberry, rasbperry, mango, pineapple or kiwi. All of these fruits would make wonderful additions; can confirm that a Mango Blueberry Banana Smoothie is pretty incredible.
- Let the veggies get in on the action - Increase the nutritional value by including a handful of spinach or kale.
- Add in other beneficial ingredients - Add in some Collagen Peptide Powder or Whey Protein Powder to double down on the benefits of your smoothie. You might also consider adding in a hearty spoonful of oats or peanut butter. Or mix in a teaspoon of a seed like chia seed.
- Sweeten it naturally - I like honey because I always typically have it on hand, but use whatever sweetener you'd like instead of honey, such as agave nectar or maple syrup to keep it natural.

“I can’t help the fact that the most fun kitchen gadgets are the noisiest, JIM.” (Kidding, love you! Have a smoothie!).
Equipment
For this smoothie recipe you will need a blender. I recently upgraded to a Vitamix blender (this specific one) and it has been a game-changer. Worth the money!
Top Tips for the BEST Blueberry Banana Smoothie
Tip 1. Use frozen blueberries. They will help keep the smoothie chilled longer.
Tip 2. Use a super-ripe banana. This naturally adds sweetness; I think a banana is perfect for this smoothie when it's on its way to turning entirely brown.
Recipe FAQs
Ice isn't necessary in this smoothie recipe because the frozen blueberries play double duty as a chilling agent and bringing the fruit blueberry flavor.
Ice would be needed here if you forgo my suggestion and use all fresh fruit; just note that the inclusion of ice will water the smoothie down a bit.
